Look at this image for a moment.

A simple white surface with one small black dot.

What did you notice first?

For most of us, the answer is obvious.

The black dot.

And that makes perfect sense.

It is different.

It stands out.

It attracts attention.

But notice something else.

The black dot occupies only a tiny part of what you are seeing.

Almost everything else is white.

And yet, the much larger white area may barely register in our attention.

This small experiment tells us something interesting about everyday experience.

We naturally notice what appears, what changes, what moves, what makes a sound, what seems important.

And very often, we overlook what is quietly present around it.

Think about sound.

When a car passes outside, your attention goes to the sound.

When someone speaks, your attention goes to the voice.

When a phone rings, you notice the ringing.

But how often do you notice the quiet around those sounds?

Not necessarily complete silence.

Just the quieter background in which sounds appear and disappear.

Now think about movement.

If somebody walks across a room, your eyes naturally follow the person.

Movement attracts attention.

But what about everything in the room that is not moving?

The wall.

The table.

The floor.

A cup sitting quietly beside you.

Stillness is also present.

We simply may not notice it.

Now consider the things you see around you.

A chair.

A screen.

A window.

A book.

A person.

We usually notice the objects.

But what about the space between them?

The space around them?

The open area that allows everything to appear where it does was already there.

Attention simply tends to move somewhere else.

None of this means that sounds, movement, or objects are problems.

We are not trying to ignore them, or replace ordinary perception with something unusual.

This course is much simpler than that.

We are going to practise widening attention.

Instead of noticing only what stands out, we will also become curious about what usually remains in the background.

We will explore this through three simple doorways.

The first doorway is Silence.

You will listen to sounds, and then begin noticing the quiet around and between them.

The second doorway is Stillness.

You will notice movement, while also discovering what is not moving.

The third doorway is Space.

You will notice objects, and then widen your attention to include the space between and around them.

These are not ideas that you need to believe.

They are experiments.

You can test them directly.

And as you practise, one simple question will occasionally appear.

Am I aware of this?

You do not need to answer that question intellectually.

You do not need to produce a special feeling or reach a particular state.

Just notice what happens when the question is asked.

So before we begin the first doorway, look at the black dot once more.

Notice the dot.

And now, notice the whole field around it.

Nothing had to disappear.

You simply included more of what was already there.

That is the spirit of this course: not trying to create a new experience, but becoming curious about what may already be present and usually unnoticed.
