The Still Space Game: Introducing Nondual Awareness and Inner Stillness to Children

Mohan Chute·Published: June 2026·8 min read

The Still Space is a guided mindfulness game that leads children through 6 levels — from swirling thoughts to pure awareness. It is the only children's game designed around the principles of nondual awareness.

Most mindfulness games for children teach children to manage their inner world. The Still Space invites them to discover the part that was never disturbed. A six-level guided game from The Holistic Care, The Still Space leads children on a journey inward — from the surface of thoughts and feelings, through the body, the senses, and the room, to the simple, open awareness that is always already present. It is, as far as we know, the only children's game built around the principles of nondual awareness.

The Six Levels of The Still Space

The game progresses through six stages, each one inviting the child's attention to rest at a subtler level of experience: Level 1 — Thoughts (observing the mind's activity from a distance); Level 2 — Feelings (acknowledging emotions without identification); Level 3 — The Body (sensing the physical form from the inside); Level 4 — The Room (expanding awareness to the environment); Level 5 — The Witness (discovering the one who is aware of all of the above); Level 6 — The Still Space (resting as awareness itself, without content). Each level is accompanied by a visual orb that shifts in colour and size, mirroring the child's expanding awareness.

Nondual Awareness: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Neuroscience

The concept of "pure awareness" — a non-conceptual, non-dual state of consciousness that underlies ordinary waking experience — is central to Advaita Vedanta, Zen Buddhism, Dzogchen (Tibetan Buddhism), and many other contemplative traditions. In Advaita Vedanta, the teacher Ramana Maharshi pointed to this awareness through the inquiry "Who is aware?" — a question that mirrors The Still Space's fifth level. Nisargadatta Maharaj, one of the twentieth century's most direct teachers of nonduality, expressed the same insight as: "I am not the mind, not the body, not the world — I am the awareness in which they all appear."

Contemporary neuroscience has begun to map the neural correlates of nondual awareness. Research from Dr. Judson Brewer at Brown University's Mindfulness Center and Dr. Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Healthy Minds has identified a shift in brain activity during advanced meditation states — a decreased activation of the default mode network (the "narrative self" network) and an increased activation of insula and anterior cingulate cortex — consistent with what meditators describe as resting as awareness itself.

Why Teach Nondual Awareness to Children?

A child who can access the "still space" — even briefly — has something powerful: a refuge. Not a cognitive strategy, not a breathing technique, but a direct experiential recognition that beneath the storm of thoughts and feelings, something is always quiet, always present, always okay. Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, in his book Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence, describes this "wheel of awareness" — with the "hub" of pure awareness at the centre and all experiences as spokes — as the neurological and experiential basis of genuine wellbeing.

Children who are introduced to this dimension of experience — gently, playfully, without dogma — tend to carry a sense of equanimity that is qualitatively different from children who have only learned emotional regulation techniques. Regulation manages the waves; nondual awareness introduces the child to the ocean.

A Note for Adults

You don't need to understand nonduality philosophically to introduce this game. Simply invite the child to play, then afterwards ask: "What was the quietest part of the game?" or "Did you notice anything that was always there, underneath everything?" Let their experience speak for itself.
