About this Pathway
The Witness Lab is Level 2 of The Holistic Care Awareness Pathway. Three Doorways to Awareness teaches you to notice. The Witness Lab invites you to investigate.
The course treats ordinary experience as a laboratory: experiment first, observe carefully, distinguish direct experience from interpretation, and reflect without forcing a philosophical conclusion.
Across sixteen guided experiments in four modules, you look closely at hearing, seeing and touch; at the body and movement; at thought, memory, mood and choice; and finally at awareness, time and the sense of separation. Each experiment has a guided audio, the original Witness Lab book page, and a short written reflection.
Nothing needs to be believed, and there is no special state to achieve. The question throughout is simple: what is actually happening in direct experience?
✦ The Method
A laboratory, not a philosophy
A laboratory does not begin with a conclusion. It begins with a question. Each experiment asks what is actually present in direct experience, and what is added later by memory, interpretation or assumption.
- Experiment
- Observe
- Reflect
- Question assumptions
✦ The Question Throughout
What is actually here?
No belief is required and there is no special state to achieve. An honest “I could not find it” is a valid result.

✦ Why It Matters
- Most experience arrives already labelled and explained. The lab teaches you to look one step earlier.
- No belief is required: every experiment can be checked in your own experience.
- An honest “I don’t know” can be more useful than a borrowed answer.
- It prepares the ground for Level 3 of the pathway, Advanced Self-Inquiry & Nondual Awareness.
✦ What you will learn
- Distinguish direct experience from interpretation, naming and assumption
- Investigate hearing, seeing and touch before labels arrive
- Compare the idea of the body with what is actually seen and felt
- Notice movement, intention and the feeling of a mover as separate events
- Watch thought, memory and mood as experiences appearing now
- Observe the sequence of a small decision without adopting a doctrine of free will or determinism
- Explore the question “What is aware?” by looking rather than arguing
- Let a question stay open, and report honestly, including “I could not find it”
