Ojas
Also known as: Vital Essence, Ayurvedic Reserve Energy
Sanskrit: ojas, meaning vigor, vitality, or essence.
Ojas is the Ayurvedic term for the subtlest and most refined product of healthy digestion, described as the reserve of vitality, immunity, and resilience that supports physical and mental strength. It is considered depleted by chronic stress, poor digestion, and irregular sleep, and supported by balanced digestion and nourishing routines.
Ayurvedic theory describes ojas as the final and most refined product of a sequential digestive process that transforms food through seven progressively subtler tissue layers, meaning its quality depends heavily on the strength of agni earlier in that chain. Rather than something to be directly manufactured, ojas is traditionally described as something protected through steady routine, adequate rest, and avoiding the kind of chronic depletion that comes from overwork or unmanaged stress.
Ayurveda describes ojas as the refined essence produced at the end of a healthy digestive process across all seven tissue layers, often translated as vital reserve or immunity, and traditionally linked to resilience, steady energy and a calm, clear mind. Because ojas depends on the whole chain of digestion working well, Ayurvedic guidance for building it emphasizes strong agni, adequate rest and avoiding chronic overexertion, rather than any single food or supplement said to produce it directly.

Agni
Agni, meaning fire, refers in Ayurveda to the body's digestive and metabolic fire, responsible for transforming food and experience into usable energy and, when balanced, into healthy tissue. Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment place strong emphasis on assessing and supporting agni, since weak digestive fire is considered a root cause of imbalance.
Dosha
Doshas are the three fundamental energies of Ayurvedic physiology, Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water), said to govern all physiological and psychological processes. Every person is understood to have a unique combination of the three, with imbalance believed to underlie illness.
