Body Scan Journey is a free mindfulness game where children travel through their body from feet to head, lighting up each part with gentle awareness. Based on the MBSR body scan, adapted into a gentle 7-step game for children aged 6–14.
The body is the child's first and most reliable teacher — and most children have never been invited to listen to it. Body Scan Journey is a free mindfulness game from The Holistic Care that guides children on a gentle tour of their own body, from feet to head, noticing what is actually there. Not to fix it, change it, or judge it — simply to know it. It is one of the oldest and most powerful mindfulness practices, made accessible for children through a seven-step visual game.
What Is a Body Scan, and Where Does It Come From?
The body scan is a core practice in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), the programme developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the 1970s. In MBSR, the body scan is the first formal practice taught — before breath meditation, before mindful movement. Kabat-Zinn describes it as "falling awake in the body" — turning the light of awareness toward the body with curiosity and care, rather than passing through it on the way to somewhere else.
The roots of the body scan go even deeper — to the Buddhist practice of kāyagatāsati ("mindfulness of the body") described in the Satipattthana Sutta, one of the earliest Buddhist texts, as the most direct path to awakening. In both ancient and clinical forms, the insight is the same: sustained, non-judgmental attention to the body as it is — right now — is profoundly settling and revelatory.
Interoception: The Sense Children Are Rarely Taught
Interoception — the ability to sense the internal state of the body, including heartbeat, breath, temperature, hunger, and physical sensations — is increasingly recognised as a core component of emotional intelligence. Dr. Antonio Damasio, neuroscientist and author of Descartes' Error, demonstrated that emotion is fundamentally a body process: feelings arise as interpretations of bodily states, not purely as mental events. Children who cannot sense their bodies accurately — who cannot feel that their chest is tight, their jaw is clenched, or their stomach is knotted — are working with a significant emotional disadvantage.
A 2019 study in Developmental Science found that children with higher interoceptive accuracy (measured by their ability to count their own heartbeats) showed better emotional regulation and lower anxiety than children with lower interoceptive accuracy. The study concluded that "training interoceptive awareness may be a promising approach to improving emotional outcomes in children."
How Body Scan Journey Works
The game presents an illustrated body figure and guides children through seven regions: feet and legs, stomach, chest and heart, hands and arms, shoulders and neck, face, and the whole body together. At each step, children are invited to notice — warmth or coolness, heaviness or lightness, tingling or stillness, tension or ease. No judgement. No right answer. Just noticing. As each region is visited, the body figure lights up gently in gold. At the seventh step, the whole body glows — a visual representation of full, integrated body awareness.
Benefits for Sleep, Anxiety, and Chronic Pain
Body scan practice has been studied in children in several contexts. For anxiety, a 2017 study in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychology found that eight sessions of body scan meditation reduced anxiety symptoms in children aged 8–13 by 41%. For sleep, research from the Sleep Medicine journal found that a 10-minute body scan before bed reduced sleep onset time by an average of 15 minutes in children. For children with chronic pain or illness — who often have a fraught or avoidant relationship with their bodies — gentle body scan practice helps rebuild a sense of safety and ownership within the body.

🌙 Bedtime Practice
Body Scan Journey makes an excellent bedtime practice for children who struggle to settle. The slow, sequential movement through the body naturally relaxes physical tension, and the quiet attention it requires naturally slows down the busy mind.
