We built 9 free, browser-based mindfulness games for children covering breathing, emotions, gratitude, body awareness, and nondual awareness. No app. No account. Open a browser and play. Here is the complete guide.
What if children could practise mindfulness the same way they play a game? No instructions from an adult. No pressure to "do it right." Just open, explore, and discover. That was the vision behind The Holistic Care's mindfulness games collection — nine browser-based mindfulness games for children, built on the latest research in positive psychology, trauma-informed practice, and nondual awareness. No app. No download. No account. Open the link and play.
Here is the complete guide to all nine games — what each one teaches, who it is for, and when to use it.
1. Breathing Buddy — Breathing Techniques for Kids
Age range: 5–14. Techniques: belly breathing, box breathing, star breathing. Breathing Buddy is the ideal starting point for children new to mindfulness. An animated character expands and contracts with the breath, guiding children through three evidence-based breathing techniques. A "calm bar" grows with each completed breath cycle. Best used before difficult moments — tests, difficult conversations, bedtime — or as a daily 3-minute practice.
2. Thought Cloud Catcher — Non-Attachment for Kids
Age range: 7–14. Technique: cognitive defusion (ACT). Worry thoughts float across the screen as clouds. Children score points by letting thoughts drift past without catching them — the opposite of the anxious instinct to engage with every worry. This is a direct, gamified introduction to what Dr. Steven Hayes calls "cognitive defusion" in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Ideal for anxious children and those with a tendency toward rumination.
3. 5-4-3-2-1 Explorer — Grounding Technique Game
Age range: 6–14. Technique: sensory grounding. One of the most evidence-based tools in child psychology — the 5-4-3-2-1 technique engages all five senses to anchor a child in the present moment, interrupting the anxiety spiral. The Explorer game makes it interactive and visual, with a live anxiety meter. Particularly effective for panic, overwhelm, and dissociation. Works in under 5 minutes.
4. The Still Space — Nondual Awareness for Children
Age range: 9–14. Technique: awareness investigation, nondual mindfulness. Six guided levels move from thoughts and feelings through the body and senses to the simple awareness that underlies all experience. The only children's game built on the principles of nondual awareness, drawing on Advaita Vedanta, Zen, and contemporary contemplative neuroscience. Best for quiet, reflective sessions and older children who are drawn to deeper questions.
5. Feeling Weather Station — Emotional Literacy
Age range: 5–12. Technique: affect labelling, emotional mapping. Children select the weather that matches their current emotional state and receive a personalised mindfulness practice. Built on research by Dr. Marc Brackett (Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence) on affect labelling — the act of naming an emotion reduces its neural intensity. Excellent for emotional check-ins, supporting children with emotional dysregulation, and building emotional vocabulary.
6. Kindness Garden — Self-Compassion Practice
Age range: 6–13. Technique: self-compassion (Kristin Neff), positive self-talk. Children plant seeds of kindness for themselves by tapping true positive statements and watch a garden bloom. Built on Dr. Kristin Neff's self-compassion research, which shows that self-compassion is a more reliable predictor of wellbeing than self-esteem. Ideal for perfectionistic, self-critical, or anxious children.
7. The Watcher Game — Observer Awareness
Age range: 8–14. Techniques: ACT observer self, IFS parts work. Children meet their inner characters (The Worrier, The Angry One, The Sad One, The Busy Mind) and then discover the Watcher — the quiet, aware part that can see all of them without becoming any of them. Based on both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and the Internal Family Systems model. Builds metacognitive awareness and emotional distance from overwhelming states.
8. Gratitude Jar — Gratitude Practice
Age range: 5–14. Technique: gratitude practice (positive psychology). Eight guided gratitude prompts drop glowing gems into an animated jar. Based on Dr. Robert Emmons' gratitude research, which has consistently found that regular gratitude practice increases wellbeing, reduces depression, and improves relationships. Best used weekly as part of a ritual, particularly on Sunday evenings or as a bedtime practice.
9. Body Scan Journey — Body Awareness Meditation
Age range: 6–14. Technique: body scan (MBSR). A guided 7-step journey through the body from feet to head, with a body figure that lights up each region. Based on the body scan from Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme. Builds interoceptive awareness, reduces anxiety, and is excellent as a bedtime settling practice. Particularly valuable for children who are disconnected from their bodies or carry somatic tension.
