The Gratitude Jar is a free mindfulness game where children drop glowing gems into a jar for every good thing in their life. Based on Dr. Robert Emmons' landmark gratitude research, it's one of the most evidence-based wellbeing practices for children.
Gratitude is not a feeling that happens to you — it is a practice that you cultivate. This is one of the most consistent findings in positive psychology, and one of the most actionable. The Gratitude Jar is a free mindfulness game from The Holistic Care that makes gratitude practice structured, visual, and rewarding for children. Eight prompts. Eight glowing gems. One jar that fills with light.
The Science of Gratitude in Children
Dr. Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at UC Davis and the world's leading scientific authority on gratitude, has spent over two decades researching its effects. His landmark studies found that people who kept weekly gratitude journals reported 25% higher life satisfaction, exercised more, had fewer health complaints, and felt more optimistic about the coming week than control groups. His 2013 book Gratitude Works! summarises this research and its applications for children and families.
Dr. Martin Seligman, founder of positive psychology and former president of the American Psychological Association, identifies gratitude as one of the five core elements of wellbeing in his PERMA model (Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement). His research on the "Three Good Things" exercise — writing down three things that went well each day and why — found that it reduced depression and increased happiness even six months after the intervention ended.
What Happens in the Brain During Gratitude
Neuroscience is beginning to map what happens in the brain when we practise gratitude. A 2015 study from Indiana University used fMRI to measure brain activity in participants receiving and expressing gratitude. The study found that expressing gratitude activated the medial prefrontal cortex (associated with moral cognition and interpersonal bonding) and the anterior cingulate cortex (associated with empathy and positive affect), while reducing activity in the amygdala (the threat-detection centre). Regular gratitude practice was associated with durable changes in these patterns — the brain literally became more attuned to positive experiences over time.
For children, this is particularly significant because the prefrontal cortex is still developing until age 25. Regular activation of these circuits through gratitude practice during childhood and adolescence may have lasting effects on the developing brain's baseline orientation toward the world.
The Eight Gratitude Prompts
The Gratitude Jar game uses eight carefully designed prompts to guide children through different dimensions of gratitude: something in nature they find beautiful; someone who has been kind to them; something their body can do that they appreciate; a happy memory from the past week; something at home that makes life better; something they are looking forward to; a challenge they are grateful they got through; and one thing about themselves they like. This range ensures children engage with gratitude across multiple domains — not just material things, but relationships, experiences, inner qualities, and the body.

🫙 Make It a Ritual
The most powerful gratitude practice happens at the same time each week — Sunday evening before the school week, or Thursday after school as a week-so-far reflection. Pair the game with a physical gratitude jar where children write their gems on paper and add them to a real jar. At the end of the year, read them all together.
