Kindness Garden is a free mindfulness game where children plant seeds of self-kindness — tapping true, positive things about themselves — and watch a garden bloom with every kind thought. Built on Dr. Kristin Neff's self-compassion research.
Many children find it far easier to be kind to others than to themselves. Kindness Garden is a free mindfulness game from The Holistic Care that addresses this imbalance — gently, playfully, and beautifully. Children plant seeds of self-kindness: tapping true things about themselves — brave things, worthy things, ordinary good things — and watching a garden grow with each kind thought. It is a game built on the science of self-compassion.
The Science of Self-Compassion in Children
Dr. Kristin Neff, associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and the world's leading researcher on self-compassion, defines it as having three components: self-kindness (treating oneself with warmth rather than harsh self-criticism), common humanity (recognising that suffering and imperfection are shared human experiences), and mindfulness (holding difficult feelings in balanced awareness rather than over-identification). Her research, spanning over two decades, has found that self-compassion is a more robust predictor of psychological wellbeing than self-esteem — and unlike self-esteem, it does not require external validation or comparison with others.
A 2018 study in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that children who scored higher on self-compassion measures showed significantly lower rates of anxiety, depression, and shame — and higher rates of curiosity, resilience, and prosocial behaviour. Crucially, self-compassionate children were more willing to try again after failure, because their sense of worth was not tied to their performance.
The Inner Critic and Why Children Need Kindness Training
The negativity bias — the brain's tendency to register negative experiences more strongly than positive ones — begins early in childhood. For children who have experienced criticism, comparison, or shame, this bias can become a harsh inner critic that colours everything they do. Dr. Rick Hanson, neuropsychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness, describes the brain as "Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones." Deliberate, regular practice with positive, kind self-talk literally rewires this, by strengthening neural pathways associated with self-worth.
Kindness Garden operationalises this rewiring. Each time a child taps a true, kind statement about themselves — "I try hard," "I am a good friend," "I am enough just as I am" — they are activating and strengthening neural circuits of self-compassion. The visual reward (a flower blooming in the garden) provides a dopamine signal that reinforces the practice.
Kindness Garden in Practice
🌸 For Parents
Play alongside your child and model the practice. Tap a statement yourself and say it out loud: "I try my best." Children learn self-compassion partly by observing adults practising it.
🏫 For Teachers
Use the game on Mondays as a "start the week kindly" ritual. Following a class disappointment (a failed test, a conflict), Kindness Garden can help re-stabilise the group's sense of worth and safety.
