Mohan Chute · Mindfulness for Children
A book for children, young learners, and anyone who has forgotten the one truth that was never actually lost — the quiet presence at the heart of all experience.
There is a moment — just before you think your next thought — where something is already present. Not your name, not your role, not your story. Just a quiet, clear knowing. A feeling of simply being here. That is what this book points to.
I AM – The Heart of Being, written by Mohan Chute and dedicated to the sage Nisargadatta Maharaj, introduces children to the most foundational insight of nondual wisdom — the recognition of pure awareness — through the language they understand best: story, imagination, and play.
Pip the seed, Chintu the monkey, Mika the young explorer, Crabby the moonlit crab, Quackers the duckling, Coco the caterpillar — each of the book's fourteen animal friends faces a different question about the mind, and each arrives at the same discovery: beneath every emotion, every thought, every label is an unchanging presence. A warm, aware space. The “Sunshine Inside.” The “Knowing Empty Space.” The still, deep water. The silent mountain. The open sky. The heart of the sea. All different names for the one thing children already are.
As the preface puts it: "Who you truly are isn't something far away — it's what you already are, right now."
Each of the 14 chapters follows a three-part structure designed for both home reading and classroom use.
A short, illustrated-style story with a relatable animal character facing a real question — about busy thoughts, changing feelings, or the fear of not knowing who they are. The narrative plants the seed naturally, without lecturing.
Each story is followed by a child-friendly guided meditation — typically 10–15 minutes — that invites the child to feel what the story described. From "The Sunshine Inside" to "Your Knowing Empty Space," each practice builds the capacity for inner stillness.
Carefully crafted questions help children process their experience, draw what they noticed, and carry the insight into daily life. Suitable for individual journaling or guided classroom discussion.
Each story is complete in itself. Together, they form a gently deepening journey into the nature of awareness.
Pip and the Magic of "I Am"
A tiny seed discovers that the knowing presence — "I am" — persists through every change, from seed to sprout to flower.
The Wise Banyan Tree
Curious monkey Chintu learns the "Am I Aware?" game and finds a stillness inside that is untouched by any thought or feeling.
Mika and Papa Elephant's Magical Knowing Space
Every thought arises in, and dissolves back into, an empty knowing space — and that space is what "I AM" truly points to.
Crabby and the Wise Banyan
Like the deep, still water beneath a rippling pool, the "I AM" remains clear and undisturbed even when the mind is busy.
The Quiet Clearing and the Falling Leaves
Duckling Quackers learns that thoughts, like falling leaves, can drift through an open space without grabbing our attention.
The Magic Onion and the True Sparkle
Beneath the costumes of "student," "friend," "sibling" — each layer peeled away reveals the unchanging sparkle of pure being.
The Still Mountain
Mountain Arun remains immovable through seasons of wind, snow, and birdsong — a living metaphor for the "I AM" that never stirs.
Binoo and the Sky Within
Just as the sky holds every cloud without being touched by them, awareness holds every experience without being defined by any.
The Magic String
A golden thread of "I AM" runs through every moment of life — connecting who you were, who you are, and who you will become.
The Unshakeable Tree
Deep roots in awareness keep us steady when the storms of thought and emotion try to shake us loose.
Oona and the Magic Lantern
Awareness is not something you create — it is the light by which everything else is seen.
"I Am": The Heart of the Sea
Every wave rises from the sea and returns to it. Every experience rises from "I AM" and dissolves back into the same source.
The Forever Present "You"
Yesterday's "you," today's "you," tomorrow's "you" — all held together by the one presence that never changes.
The Time Travelers
A final adventure across past, present, and future — discovering that "I AM" is the only moment that has ever existed.
The Sunshine Inside
Awareness is like a warm glow that persists through every change — from seed to sprout to flower, it is always the one that knows.
The Knowing Empty Space
Thoughts appear in us like guests and dissolve back into the same open space. That space itself is what "I AM" truly is.
The Deep Still Pool
Thoughts and feelings are the surface ripples. The "I AM" is the deep, undisturbed water beneath — always clear, always present.
The Still Mountain
No wind, no season, no storm has ever moved the mountain's core. The "I AM" is that immovable presence in each of us.
The Open Sky
The sky holds every cloud — joy, sadness, excitement, confusion — without being limited or stained by any of them.
The Magic Onion
Beneath every role we play — student, friend, sibling — lies a pure sparkle: the self that wears costumes but is never a costume.
Children aged 6–14
The stories are accessible for younger readers; the meditations and worksheets deepen with age. A 7-year-old and a 13-year-old will both find something real here.
Parents and Families
Read together before bedtime. The guided meditations are designed to be narrated by a parent or caregiver, making them a natural part of a calming evening routine.
School Teachers and Counsellors
The three-part chapter format — story, meditation, worksheet — maps directly onto classroom time. The worksheets support SEL (social-emotional learning) outcomes without requiring any prior training in mindfulness.
Yoga and Mindfulness Facilitators
Facilitators working with children's groups will find the book a ready-made curriculum. Each chapter stands alone, or all 14 can be taught as a full-term programme.
Adults on the inner path
Sometimes the simplest language carries the deepest truth. Readers of Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ramana Maharshi, or Rupert Spira often find that the book articulates the "I AM" investigation with unexpected clarity.
