Tracing Your Hand: A Gentle Pause

Presented by Mohan Chute · Duration

How can tracing a hand offer children a small, gentle pause?

Quick answer

Rest one hand comfortably and slowly trace around the fingers with a finger from your other hand, or follow a hand outline drawn on paper. Keep the touch light and breathing natural, and stop whenever you like.

In this episode

A hand tracing activity, on the hand or on paper, that offers a simple point of focus through movement and light touch, with breathing left natural.

Who it is for: Parents, caregivers and teachers of young children.

Key takeaways

  • Breathing stays natural; there is nothing to control.
  • A paper outline works just as well as touch.
  • Tracing one or two fingers is enough.
  • Children can show rather than explain.

Practical ideas to try

  1. Rest one hand with fingers relaxed.
  2. Slowly trace the edge of the thumb, then the next finger.
  3. Choose a comfortable pressure, or trace a drawn outline instead.
  4. Ask what your child noticed, and try their preferred version together.

A real-life moment

While waiting at the doctor's office, a parent shows their child how to trace slowly around their thumb. The child traces two fingers, then decides to draw around their hand on a scrap of paper and colour each finger.

Adapting for different ages and needs

Young children may enjoy tracing a parent's hand or a stencil. Older children can trace slowly while naming what they feel. Children with sensory sensitivities can use paper outlines and choose their own drawing tool.

Keeping it comfortable

Avoid instructions to breathe in a particular way. Light, comfortable touch is enough, and stopping early is always fine.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as five-finger breathing?

It is similar, but this episode keeps breathing natural and focuses on movement and touch.

What if my child does not like touch?

Draw a hand outline on paper and trace it with a finger or crayon instead.

When can we use this activity?

Anytime you want a quiet moment, such as before homework, after play or at bedtime.

Welcome to The Holistic Care Podcast. I'm Mohan. Today, try a gentle hand tracing activity.

Rest one hand comfortably, with its fingers relaxed. Using a finger from your other hand, slowly follow the outside edge of your thumb. Then trace along the next finger.

Notice the movement and the light touch. Let your breathing stay natural. Choose a pressure that feels comfortable.

If touching your hand does not suit you, draw an outline on paper and follow that instead. Take your time with one or two fingers. You can continue around the hand, or finish wherever you like.

Ask your child, “What did you notice?” Perhaps the shape of a finger… the feeling of touch… or the line on the page. They can show you rather than explain. You can try their preferred version together.

Then let your hands rest. Look around the room and choose what you would like to do next. A familiar hand, or a simple drawing, has given us a small place to focus our attention.
